Medic

It won't shoot you, but it'll keep your enemies alive long enough to regret it.

The Medic is a small, floating support enemy found throughout the Gungeon's lower floors. Unlike the vast majority of foes the Gunner faces, the Medic poses no direct offensive threat—it never aims a weapon at the player. Instead, it hovers near clusters of enemies and fires slow, arcing healing projectiles that restore their health, effectively acting as a battlefield triage unit for the Gungeon's haphazard defense forces.

This makes the Medic one of the most tactically interesting enemies in the game. A room full of otherwise beatable foes can become a grinding nuisance if a Medic is present, constantly patching up damage the Gunner has dealt. Players who learn to prioritize it early in a room's encounter gain a significant advantage, while those who ignore it can find themselves fighting a regenerating horde.

Lore & Background

The Gungeon's automated defense systems were never designed with elegance in mind. They were designed with redundancy. The Medic is a product of that philosophy: a small, self-contained repair drone deployed alongside combat units to ensure that a single room's garrison can sustain a prolonged engagement. Its programming is simple—detect damaged allies within range, emit a restorative pulse, repeat. It has no concept of the Gunner as a threat, only as an obstacle to the healing process.

Over the many centuries the Gungeon has stood, these little drones have become as iconic as the turret nests or the boss chambers. They drift through corridors in pairs or small clusters, their soft humming and the gentle green glow of their healing shots creating an almost serene atmosphere in rooms that are otherwise a cacophony of bullets and explosions. The contrast is part of the Gungeon's strange, layered identity: a place that is simultaneously a death trap and a functioning, if broken, medical ward.

Fans often note the Medic's quiet presence as a reminder that the Gungeon was built by someone. Someone who expected its defenders to get hurt and planned for it. That small act of in-universe foresight—sending a healer out with the soldiers—adds a layer of worldbuilding depth to an otherwise straightforward bullet-hell encounter.

In Their Own Story

The corridor smelled of ozone and old rust. Kael pressed their back against the wall, watching the little drone bob up and down in the center of the room. It hadn't even looked at them. It never did. Its tiny lens swiveled toward the cluster of turret-golems to the left, and a soft green orb drifted out of its chassis, arcing gently into the golem's cracked plating. The crack sealed. The golem's eye flickered back to a hostile red.

Kael exhaled through their nose. Three more shots. They could do three more shots. They lined up the crosshair, felt the familiar weight of the pistol, and fired. The Medic's shell cracked open with a small, almost apologetic *pop*, and a faint green mist dissipated into the recycled air. The golems stood still, vulnerable, waiting. Kael smiled. "Sorry, little guy. You were doing your job."

Reader's Guide

Visually, the Medic is a small, rounded floating body—think a compact drone or pod—marked with a prominent medical cross or plus symbol on its front. Its color palette is light (whites and pale tones) with the cross rendered in a contrasting hue, making it instantly readable against the Gungeon's darker backgrounds. It hovers in place or drifts slowly, never charging at the player.

Behaviorally, the Medic is passive toward the Gunner. It does not fire offensive projectiles. Instead, it continuously emits slow, arcing healing shots toward the nearest damaged enemy in the room. If multiple enemies are present, it cycles between them. If no allies are in range, it simply hovers idly, making it trivially easy to kill.

It appears on multiple floors in the mid-to-late Gungeon, typically in rooms that also contain other enemy types. It rarely appears alone, since its entire purpose is support.

Tactically, the Medic interacts with every weapon in the same way: it has low HP and dies in one or two hits. Relics or weapons that deal area damage (bombs, spread shots, explosions) can take it out alongside the enemies it was healing, which is often the most efficient approach. There is no special relic that counters it specifically, but any high-dPS weapon makes it a non-issue.

In the Gungeon's ecosystem, the Medic represents the support layer of the automated defense. It is the reason a room of four enemies can feel like eight. Removing it early shifts the encounter from a sustained fight to a quick clear, and experienced players develop an almost instinctive habit of shooting the little cross-marked drone the moment they see it drift into a room.
